Aerial view of Chandler, Arizona, showcasing a sprawling residential landscape, highlighting the city's appeal for homeowners considering solar energy solutions.

Chandler's combination of high sun exposure, significant summer cooling loads, and a well-educated homeowner base makes it one of the strongest solar markets in the East Valley. It's also one of the most competitive — which means the quality of solar companies operating here varies widely.

Whether you're comparing new installation quotes, dealing with a system that's underperforming, or trying to figure out your options after your original installer closed — this guide covers what Chandler homeowners specifically need to know.

Chandler Solar Permitting

Chandler processes solar permits through its permits department. The city has a well-established process for residential solar given the volume of installations in the area. A licensed contractor should handle permit applications, inspections, and utility interconnection paperwork entirely — homeowners shouldn't need to manage any of this directly.

Chandler requires one safety disconnect for residential solar systems. This is the same requirement as Scottsdale and Mesa — fewer than Peoria, which requires two. Your installer should be familiar with Chandler's specific inspection and approval process and shouldn't need to learn it on your job.

If an installer says they'll handle permits 'after installation' or suggests skipping the permit to move faster — walk away. Unpermitted solar creates problems when you sell your home and can void equipment warranties.

APS vs. SRP in Chandler

Chandler is one of several East Valley cities served by both APS and SRP. Your utility determines your rate structure, solar export credits, and the interconnection process — and those details matter more to your long-term savings than most sales presentations acknowledge.

Confirming Your Utility

Check your electric bill. The utility name will be clearly listed. If you're comparing quotes from multiple solar companies, make sure each one is using the correct utility assumptions for your address — a surprisingly common mistake that leads to inflated savings projections.

APS Customers in Chandler

APS uses net billing and time-of-use rate plans. Peak hours — when electricity costs significantly more — typically fall in the late afternoon and early evening. For Chandler homeowners with high summer cooling loads, understanding when your system is producing versus when your home is drawing the most power is essential for realistic savings estimates.

SRP Customers in Chandler

SRP transitioned from net metering to net billing in November 2025. Exported solar energy is credited at a below-retail rate. Review SRP's current solar plan options before approving a system design — the right plan affects payback period significantly.

Chandler tip: Ask any installer to show you a savings estimate based on your last 12 months of actual bills — not a generic statewide average. Summer bills in Chandler can be 3x winter bills, and a well-designed system should account for that seasonal variation.

HOA Rights for Chandler Solar Homeowners

Chandler has a large number of HOA-governed communities, particularly in the master-planned developments that make up much of the city's residential growth. HOA solar disputes are not uncommon — but Arizona law gives homeowners clear protections.

Under Arizona Revised Statute 33-1816, your HOA cannot:

•       Prohibit solar installations outright

•       Impose restrictions that increase your total system cost by more than $1,000

•       Require panel placement that reduces efficiency by more than 10%

•       Enforce any solar restriction that violates this statute — those rules are void

HOAs can establish reasonable aesthetic guidelines within those limits. The smoothest Chandler solar projects are usually the ones where the homeowner submits proper HOA paperwork early and the installer has experience navigating the approval process — even when the HOA's rules are ultimately unenforceable.

Already Have Solar in Chandler? Here's What You Should Know

Chandler has been a heavily targeted solar market for over a decade. Many of the companies that sold aggressively here in the 2015–2022 period have since consolidated, been acquired, or closed. If your original installer is no longer around, you still have options.

Your Equipment Warranty Is Still Valid

Equipment warranties are with the manufacturer, not the installer. SolarEdge, Enphase, Fronius, Tesla, Generac, and other brands honor their warranties regardless of what happened to the company that installed your system. A licensed contractor can file claims on your behalf — in most cases you pay labor only, not the cost of new equipment.

Common Issues We See in Chandler Systems

•       Inverter failures in systems installed 8-12 years ago — many are reaching end of typical lifespan

•       Systems sized too large for actual usage — oversized systems were a common sales tactic

•       Monitoring disconnected or never properly configured after installation

•       Panels installed on roofs that needed replacement — creating reinstallation problems later

•       Bird and critter nesting under panels — common throughout the East Valley

The Oversized System Problem

One issue specific to Chandler's sales-heavy solar market: systems that were intentionally oversized to maximize the sale price. An oversized system generates more power than the home can use, produces excess credits at below-retail rates, and never achieves the payback period the homeowner was promised. If your solar bill savings haven't matched what you were told, system sizing is worth reviewing.

The Bottom Line for Chandler Solar Homeowners

Chandler is an excellent solar market with high sun exposure and significant summer electric bills that solar can meaningfully offset. The challenge is that it's also been heavily marketed, which means a lot of homeowners have systems that weren't designed with their best interests in mind.

Whether you're evaluating a new installation or trying to figure out why your existing system isn't performing as promised, the answer starts with an honest assessment — not another sales pitch. We're happy to provide that.
